Think Globally; Act Locally

Today was the season kickoff of our city farmer's market. AKA: My favorite day of the year. I was so excited that I couldn't sleep. I know that it's really early in the season and we have had a late spring, but I just couldn't wait.

Josh and I actually made out quite well.

2 bags of spinach/lettuce mix: $5.00
1 bag of baby greens: $2.50
2 Bunches of Asparagus: $6.00
A big thing of honey with a bear bottle thrown in for free: $5.00
Stew meat: $4.70
Hamburger: $4.10

Total: $27.30

The meat is locally grown from the Price Family Farm. The animals are given no antibiotics or steroids, and are free range grass fed. We are anticipating ordering a quarter cow for around $400 that will last l for almost a year. (I'm trying to talk Josh into it.)

The greens are going to my parent's cabin on Monday where we will be partaking in a lakeside cookout.

The asparagus was a bit pricey, but worth every cent. It is absolutely fresh and so tender.

I have been reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, by Barbara Kingsolver and her posse. This book speaks to me. They essentially eat only local foods. They grow as much as they can and source the rest from other in their area. Although I live in an apartment, I really think that Josh and I can do this. We are already maintaining a container garden with radishes, carrots, greens, swiss chard, spinach, beets, and nine different herbs. It may take a little more effort, but we will be helping area farmers and ourselves. If you haven't read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, please do so. Also visit photos of the Kingsolver seasonal farm.

I read a blog called the Frigidare Pair, where two Robins are members of a fair shares organic CSA. Although these two are only beginning their CSA season, I really look forward to perusing their posts about what produce and other things that they receive for the week. I am really interested in becoming a member of a CSA. However, I would really like to be a part of an all vegetable one.

Gluten Free Girl, Shauna, and her chef will be co-authoring two cookbooks in the next couple of years. I almost shouted with joy when I heard this news. The cookbook will be entitled, Dancing in the Kitchen. That is the most fantastic name. The Gluten Free Girl blog is one of my favorite blogs ever. Shauna has such a passion for life and love for her chef. She also cooks and eats the most fabulous foods, all gluten free. It reminds me a lot of what Josh and I have together.

Please hold Pikachu close to your heart. He has developed epilepsy and is now on medication. We are taking extra special care of the little guy, as if he isn't already spoiled enough.
