In honour of the Ohio State win this weekend and the fact that my husband has been wearing various Ohio State sweatshirts for the last three days, I made Buckeyes.
These candies are a much awaited treat only made during the holiday seasons. Usually we wait until after Thanksgiving, but somehow it seemed fitting.
This simple, handwritten recipe, was handed down to us from his grandmother and mother. I am translating this verbatim for nostalgia. Sometimes that beats even the best chef's recipes.
Buckeye Candy
Mix together 2 sticks melted margarine (butter)
2 cups smooth peanut butter
USE DOUBLE BROILER
41/2 c. powdered sugar
*will probably have to put in freezer for a little while to make balls
-Shape into balls the size of buckeyes
-Refrigerate approx. 1 hr.
Melt: 12 oz. choc. chips and 1/2 bar parafin wax
in top of double broiler.
Stick toothpick in balls & dip halfway
into choc. mixture. Let set on wax paper.
Store in coolplace.
I find it best to use Jif. Any other peanut butter will not let the candies set properly. They will be mushy.
